Greek Orthodox faith celebrates weddings in a symbolic and highly spiritual way that is both inspirational and emotional. The form of ceremony remains the same hundreds of years now and is different from any other wedding service celebrated in Western Europe, North and South America.



The priest says several prayers for the couple and then he joins their hands in a gesture that symbolizes the couple’s union. The exchanging of rings, the crowning of the bride and groom and finally the blessing of the couple by the priest in which he reminds them that only God can break the union they have just entered to, are key parts of the traditional ceremony.

In Greek Orthodox weddings, the bride and groom do not exchange vows – their vows are addressed to God. The ceremony is performed in Ancient Greek only.
